Employee Spotlight: Zach Ulmer

Zach Ulmer is a Senior Designer at Sage Communications. A 2012 graduate of Radford University, Zach supports a number of Sage's clients through strategic and creative design counsel and execution.

What are your duties in a typical day here at Sage?
Design advertising and marketing materials for our clients, which can include anything from logos to annual reports to websites and social media creative.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in a designer role?

Enjoy the crazy rollercoaster ride that is advertising. Remember to celebrate the wins and learn from the mistakes – you’re going to make them but don’t let them define you.

What is your favorite way to spend Flex Friday? (Sagers work an extra 30 minutes every day to have half days every other Friday!)

When it’s warm, I like to go kayaking. When it’s chilly – or I’m lazy – I like to get an early seat at Crooked Run Brewery.

What is the most exciting thing you’re working on right now?
FestivAle! We just helped launch a seasonal beer for The National Cherry Blossom Festival in collaboration with Old Ox Brewery. I’ve always wanted to design a beer can and I’m excited to have crossed that off my designer wish list.

Who inspires you?

My fellow designers, my favorite drag queen Trixie Mattel, and Daenerys Targaryen.

What quote do you live by?
Often easier said than done…

“But you know, happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.” ― Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Where is your favorite place to travel?

I love a summer beach trip but I also wouldn’t mind revisiting Aruba.

What are three things still left on your bucket list?
Travel to Europe, meet RuPaul, and adopt a puppy.

What is the most important lesson you’ve learned while at Sage?

To be successful is to be resilient.
