Employee Spotlight: Kathleen Markey

What are your duties in a typical day here at Sage?

There is no typical day and that’s a good thing. A lot of what I do is ensure that the voice of our client’s customers/stakeholders is front and present and that we understand our customers’ ecosystem and then use that information to guide strategy. On any given day I might be conducting one-on-one interviews or a competitive audit, brainstorming on a brand positioning, creating targeted messaging, developing a communications plan, reading up on anything and everything there is to know about a particularly industry or service area or meeting with colleagues to collaborate on any of the above.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in an Office Dog role?

Don’t get overly excited around the fishbowl – that’s glass. You cannot run through it. Also, don’t run around on the conference table if Larry’s in the office.

What is your favorite way to spend Flex Friday? (Sagers work an extra 30 minutes everyday to have half days every other Friday!)

I don’t take advantage of Flex Friday specifically as my life with two kids – and often work – can be unpredictable, but I greatly appreciate Sage’s flexing policy.

What is the most exciting thing you’re working on right now?

Purchasing Power – a client that’s open to new ideas, keen on strategy and gives us an opportunity to be creative. We’ve already partnered with them on three separate strategy phases (messaging, online focus groups, and a comprehensive quantitative survey). Our latest project is a pilot approach to developing an account based marketing plan to help them increase reach, awareness and customers in the federal employee market.

Who inspires you?

An amalgam of strong women – each for different reasons and moments of how they approach and balance their passions in life

What quote do you live by?

Admittedly, I don’t really have a quote, so I looked some up and these two resonate with me. “ Follow your inner moonlight; don’t hide the madness.”– Allen Ginsberg; and, “Be yourself; everyone else is already taken. ” -Oscar Wilde

Where is your favorite place to travel?

I love to experience new places, but for a real break, I’d say Cat Island, a Bahamian Out Island where my husband has some land. It’s very remote, primarily undeveloped, and a good get-a-way from life as we know it here. (Check out my desktop screensaver)

What are three things still left on your bucket list?

1. Make a bucket list

2. Another trip to Europe with my husband and two kids

3. The Pacific Northwest Coast, including Alaska

What is the most important lesson you’ve learned while at Sage?

Listen to co-workers. We’ve got some incredibly smart folks here at Sage and everyone has something to contribute or learn from. I’m amazed every day.
