Employee Spotlight: Huong Cao
Huong Cao is a PR Account Coordinator at Sage Communications. A 2018 graduate of George Mason University, Huong supports a number of Sage's clients through public relations and social media deliverables.
What are your duties in a typical day here at Sage?
One of the most interesting things about working in PR is that no two days are the same. While my daily to-do lists vary each day, they often include pitching the media, researching and securing speaking and editorial opportunities, and writing various communication materials. I also do research into various client industries and monitor current news every day to identify timely story angles and pitching opportunities.
What is the most exciting thing you’re working on right now?
I’m working with my team to help develop and tell stories of a company who is the rugged solutions provider for defense and commercial customers. I enjoy the challenges in reading interestingly complex information to identify story angles and sharing them with journalists in a clear and compelling way.
Who inspires you?
This would be a long list. I’m naturally curious about how people get to where they are. Every time people share with me how they become good at doing something—no matter if it was PR, writing, cooking, public speaking, or anything, they reiterate the importance of hard work and inspire me. Those stories teach me that while luck can be critical, it’s also too uncertain to rely on.
What quote do you live by?
“No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it's not the same river and he's not the same man.” This quote teaches me to accept changes and embrace the present because each moment—either happy or sad—is unique and will pass. It also reminds me to reflect on my life and myself—how I change each day and if I’m changing for the better.
Where is your favorite place to travel?
I like places that evoke a peaceful feeling such as farms, rivers, and islands. However, I also want to visit exciting places that have roller coasters around the world and have good cuisine! (weird contradiction!)
What are three things still left on your bucket list?
Go to yoga class more often
Do cool activities such as kayaking, parasailing, etc
What is the most important lesson you’ve learned while at Sage?
PR industry is fast-paced, so time management and prioritization are crucial. One thing I learned when dealing with conflicting priorities is to recognize and prioritize tasks that have return-on-investment for my clients. However, the most important thing is knowing when you need to ask for advice and that colleagues are the best resources.
